    Use wood ashes …
Use wood ashes sparingly in your compost…no more than a dusting on each layer..no more than 1/2 cup per bushel. It is a strong alkalinizing agent and also increases soil salinity. The microorganisms that break down the organic materials like a slightly acidic condition and wood ashes would reduce their number. Excessive amounts of wood ashes result in loss of nitrogen from the pile.
