In cold weather the heat shed by incandescent lamps contributes to heating, but in hot climates lamp losses and increase the energy used by air conditioning systems.
Incandescent light bulbs give off most of their energy in the form of heat-only about 10 percent of the light produced in the visible spectrum. This wastes a lot of electricity. Cool light sources, such as fluorescent lamps and LEDs, don’t waste a lot of energy; they give off mostly visible light. For this reason, they are slowly edging out the old reliable light bulb.
Cheap, effective and easy-to-use, the light bulb has proved a monstrous success. It is still the most popular method of bringing light indoors and extending the day after sundown. But it is not very efficient.
The incandescent bulbs are prepared in a wide range of configuration and voltages that ranges from 1.5 volts to about 300 volts. And these light bulbs do not need any outer regulating apparatus and have a low production price.
As a consequence the incandescent lamp is extensively used in household purposes, and for commercial lighting, for portable lighting like table lamps, few car headlamps and electric flashlights and for pretty and publicity lighting.
