Westview Compost Garden project 1 year in the making July 2008-July 2009

This is a video documenting a compost garden project that I started in July 2008. It shows the progression from an empty clay field into a lush garden using only garden waste and seeds. It won’t happen over night, actually it takes about a year depending on your climate, but it’s free and good for the enviroment. If you have any questions please send me a message.
Here is a more detailed list of all the steps to make this garden happen.

1. I staked out the area where I wanted my flowerbed (50 x 3 feet.)

2. I then collected bags of grass clippings and leaves from my neighborhood and worked them into the clay soil.

3. I continued to collect more grass clipping and leaves throughout the summer and fall ( about 20 bags total) and added them to the area I staked out.

4. I would periodically turn the pile to allow the organic matter to decompose.

5. In late October I scattered the area in seeds which I had been collecting from my own yard and from friends, family and neighbors.(such as poppies, bachelor buttons etc.)

6. I let the area sit for the whole winter.

7. In early spring I gave the organic matter one last turn.

Worm compost is the answer to many gardening problems. Some people may experience goose bumps with the thought of all those worms in a single area and so many worms can cause your everyday person to shiver.

Worms have been reputed to greatly benefit the soil and the compost bin. It is not much of a surprise that they play a vital role in the processing of compost. The process of worm compost may take a little getting used to, try to open your mind and consider the advantages of worm composting.

No matter if you decide to have your worm compost inside a structure or out in the elements, you can have them either inside, or outside, it doesn’t matter. The good thing is that you won’t worry much about your worm compost. They are very easy to move and are non-complaining workers day by day for relatively no charge. All you need to do is feed them to keep them in top condition.

Worms enjoy damp soil moisture being one of the easiest parts of composting. If you are able to provide the moisture, you can just wait and see until the works perform their work in helping you keeping your soil fertilized.

Worms are mainly readily available and are very easy to find in a few areas you need not look very hard at all. You just have to grab a jar and pay attention to the ground while walking in the garden since they will be happy in an enclosed area rich with food.

We’ve set up our compost bin, and are almost finished with our Square Foot Garden. We have to nail down the lathing for the grids and then do our sowing and planting. Finally!

Water coming out of composter?

Hi, I’m a first time composter. I put a little of soil in my composter, worms, and compostable items (orange peels, yard clippings, etc.), but every time I look at it, there’s water but the items are being broken down. Everyday I look at it, there’s just more water. It’s not raining over here so I don’t know what’s going on.

This is a natural part of things breaking down.
My worm composter has a spigot at the bottom so I can drain out what I call "worm juice", it’s really just liquid compost. I put about a cup of this stuff in a large watering can of water and use it to feed my many potted plants…they love it!
When it’s dry out and the composting isn’t making much juice, I add water from the top to keep things moist.
