500 showers heated from one small compost pile how to tutorial

http://www.permies.com
Brian Kerkvliet from Inspiration Farm tells us about his little compost pile that provided 500 hot showers. Compost heat can, indeed, be captured to heat water. After the hot showers, you have a lovely pile of compost! The moisture from the shower feeds mushrooms! Hot water, compost and mushrooms. Permaculture!

    what a great idea …
what a great idea and has a great flow-on effect. The importance would be on where you place your shower to get the most impact on the surrounds as well. Thanks for sharing!!

    it is also possible …
it is also possible to recuperate the heat from the waste of showers, dishwasher, washer/dryer. one thing important to remember is to use stainless steel or synthetic in contact with waste water. The more extreme temperatures between input from well or city temp., the better efficiency to preheat the water prior to conventional or other water heater. The copper wraps around the large diameter waste pipe i.e. transfer the energy. This copper wrap is sold on the market.

    this is the future, …
this is the future, great for heating a pool (and showers) in combo with solar and heatpump, can heat floors in houses and public bldgs. Compost toilets are becoming more popular too, but not as easy perhaps… be very carefull with the compost, if it is not mature, it will create problems, we experienced it. Grass, leaves, flower gardens waste, etc; the water flow keeps the pile from overheating. Farms used to burn from hay fires… so not too near a bldg.

@peetrwilson My impression is that they buzzed about the farm and got a little of this and a little of that. Probably some funky hay, some funky straw, some weeds, some cow pies, etc.

    Not to mention this …
Not to mention this is how commercial products are created. Imagine throwing your food scraps in the top of a water heater sleeve in an insulated closet outside your house. If its large enough it can heat the house and give free hot water. These guys are pioneers. Use your imagination!!

    maybe, maybe it’s a …
maybe, maybe it’s a root of fertile earth, but hardly IS. And yes I can see if we all lived in huts in the country we could all have these piles of rubbage sitting all around our huts, but who would need to shower?, I mean with all that smell who would notice?.j/king of course. Maybe one aught to look into the use of garbage as a fuel source, which is being done all over the world, google the enzymes used to turn compost into ethonol, now theres a useful idea.

Uneducated idiot. Compost is fertile earth, you grow the food you eat with it. Where do you think topsoil comes from?
