A solution has been discovered to one of the environmental problems and the lack of nutrition in soil. This technique has undergone exhaustive testing in laboratories and has been demonstrated to be of use.

Worm compost is the answer to many gardening problems. Some people may experience goose bumps with the thought of all those worms in a single area and so many worms can cause your everyday person to shiver.

Worms have been reputed to greatly benefit the soil and the compost bin. It is not much of a surprise that they play a vital role in the processing of compost. The process of worm compost may take a little getting used to, try to open your mind and consider the advantages of worm composting.

No matter if you decide to have your worm compost inside a structure or out in the elements, you can have them either inside, or outside, it doesn’t matter. The good thing is that you won’t worry much about your worm compost. They are very easy to move and are non-complaining workers day by day for relatively no charge. All you need to do is feed them to keep them in top condition.

Worms enjoy damp soil moisture being one of the easiest parts of composting. If you are able to provide the moisture, you can just wait and see until the works perform their work in helping you keeping your soil fertilized.

Worms are mainly readily available and are very easy to find in a few areas you need not look very hard at all. You just have to grab a jar and pay attention to the ground while walking in the garden since they will be happy in an enclosed area rich with food.

I have been worm composting kitchen scraps using tupperware containers for about a year now. Now that I have a good supply of compost, I want to separate the worms from the compost. The compost goes into the garden, the worms go to a new pile (and maybe a few to the fish in the aquarium!).

Anyone have any good and easy methods to effectively and efficiently separate the worms from the compost?

Hey William,

Harvesting

If you take care of your worms and create a favorable environment for them, they will work tirelessly to eat your "garbage" and produce compost. As time progresses, you will notice less and less bedding and more and more compost in your bin. After 3-5 months, when your bin is filled with compost (and very little bedding), it is time to harvest the bin. Harvesting means removing the finished compost from the bin. After several months, worms need to be separated from their castings which, at high concentrations, create an unhealthy environment for them.

To prepare for harvesting, do not add new food to the bin for two weeks. Then try one of two methods for harvesting:

Push all of the worm bin contents to one half of the bin, removing any large pieces of undecomposed food or newspaper. Put fresh bedding and food scraps in empty side of bin. Continue burying food scraps only in freshly bedded half.

Over the next 2-3 weeks, the worms will move over to the new side (where the food is), conveniently leaving their compost behind in one section. When this has happened, remove the compost and replace it with fresh bedding. To facilitate worm migration, cover only the new side of the bin, causing the old side to dry out and encouraging the worms to leave the old side.

Hands-On Method:

Dump the entire contents of the worm bin onto a sheet of plastic or paper. Make several individual cone-shaped piles. Each pile will contain worms, compost and undecomposed food and bedding. As the piles are exposed to light,, the worms will migrate towards the bottom of the pile. Remove the top layer of compost from the pile, separating out pieces of undecomposed food and newspaper. After removing the top layer, let pile sit under light for 2-3 minutes as the worms migrate down. Then remove the next layer of compost. Repeat this process until all of the worms are left at the bottom of the pile. Collect the worms, weigh them (for your record keeping) and put them back in their bin with fresh bedding.

Regardless of which method you choose, the compost you harvest will most likely contain a worm or two, along with old food scraps and bedding. If you are using the compost outdoors, there is no need to worry–the worms will find a happy home and the food scraps and bedding will eventually decompose. If you are using the compost indoors, you may want to remove old bedding and food scraps for aesthetic purposes and ensure that there are no worms in the compost. Though the worms will not harm your plants, the worms may not like living in a small pot.

For both methods, you may continue to compost your food scraps after harvesting. Just add fresh bedding and food scraps. If, for some reason, you do not want to continue composting, please offer the setup to another teacher or to someone who will take the worm bin home. Anyone with a garden will find the worm compost extremely valuable. As a last resort, if you cannot find anyone who wants good worm compost, you may add the worms to a garden bed.

Hi, I have about a dozen hard boiled eggs left over and I was wondering if I can put them in my compost bin or my worm bin. I've always read you can add the egg shells but never on weather the contents of the eggs shells can go in and why not if they can't. Anyway, if I have a preference it would be to give them to the worms as we've been light in feeding them this week. Thanks!

yes but this requires a specially designed composter. Composters that can handle meat and milk products have several common features.

1) They are air tight or otherwise designed to contain odours.

2) They have reinforced sides to keep scavengers out.

3) They have aerating features that bring fresh oxygen in and promote the activity of aerobic bacteria, or in the case of the bokashi composters, they use special anaerobic bacteria.

4) They are insulated to generate high temperatures that thermophilic bacteria use to break down proteins.

I'd like to get a composter and begin making my own compost, but is there one that's better between a spinning composter, a worm composter, or a tray composter that only uses solar heat (no worms)?

The types of composting you refer to are quite different.Good compost is essentially speeding up the natural process of decomposition in order to get a good soil amendment with a mix of nutrients that are in form that is easy for plants to ingest.
In the wild, worms are an integral part of this process. Worm composting systems leave you with worm castings, which is a great organic fertilizer and nitrogen supplement, but won't have the add benefits of improving drainage, soil structure, and micro nutrient absorption. I would recommend just buying some worms and tossing them into a regular composter. That way the worms will speed up the composting process, thereby elimating potential odor problems, as well as improving your soil quality and structure when you begin planting. Make sure to throw a handful or two of your old compost in your new batch in order to transfer the the microbes and worms, which are responsible for the entire composting process.
Good luck and take care!
