Barb Finnin is part of the amazing Freshtopia team. She’s a certified master composter- her specialty is Vermicomposting with worms. We were super excited to learn that we could compost in our city apartment with a homemade worm bin even though we don’t have a yard. Throwing food scraps away in the garbage is not something either of us enjoys, so having a green alternative has been more than satisfying for our sustainability goals. After 4 weeks, our worms are happy and thriving.

How can I start a compost heap without a garden? I have a small balcony…?
I don't want to spend much money… and i dont have much room. I would rather not have one of those indoor composting things due to lack of space and storage…
For those who asked… i dont have a garden, but i do have quite a few potted plants etc on my balcony and im always in need of compost!
You can create compost on just about any scale. A mixture of kitchen waste, greens only!!! no meat !!! and some shreded newspaper for browns, toss a little starter dirt in and it will decay and produce "black gold'> Any plastic container will do. A trash can, a rubbernaid container etc. The mix should be moist but not soaking wet. Cricital mass to achive the proper heat for compost piles is rather large and you will not achive it on your balcony, but go for it anyway, mix it, stir it and let it rot. Makes the best plant food on earth !!!!
Great stuff to put in the tub includes all green matter, cooked or trimmings, coffee grounds, paper goods ( avoid the heavy inked color pieces) ohh..and add a few worms…lol…let them help if the temps don't kill em off

When do I put the compost in my garden?
I am doing a report on composting. This is my last question: Do I start before or after the plants grow? I searched millions of webpages and couldn’t find a answer.
You can compost all year round the best time is in the early Autumn just before the first frost or if you are lucky the first hard rain.
dig your ground and then cover it with the compost leave fro a week then dig again however you can always rot-ovate if you have one then leave till early spring dig or rot-ovate again then plant this give the ground time to absorb the nutrient’s in the compost you will have a better garden or vegetable garden than anyone else

What makes good compost for veggie garden?
How long does it take to make coffee grounds, egg shells, etc into usable fertilizer? Should I add horse manure? Dig a hole? Poke holes in a trash can? All reliable info welcome. Please give sources.
The old method is to simply pile it all on the ground. Earthworms come up into the pile to digest it. These fancy composters boast of being able to make perfect compost in a very short time (the shortest I read was 2wks!). Who cares! Were I live in Canada it takes 2-3yrs. It doesn't matter because after 3yrs you are going to have a regular supply anyway. If you've gardened long enough you become much more patient. Most older gardeners just have a pile down the bottom of the garden that they turn over once a year. Then start a new pile the next year.

What happens if you use unfinished compost in your garden?
I started a compost pile about 3 or 4 weeks ago. But, I want to start planting vegetables in May. Could I (or should I) use some of the unfinished compost mixed in with soil when planting the vegetable seeds? Or should the unfinished compost be placed on the top of the soil?
Or should the unfinished compost not be added at all?
Unfinished compost can carry a lot of ¨germs¨. The bad bacterias and fungi that help compost to break-down are are not good for weak seedlings that need the most tolerable environment possible. Especially if there were any signs of mildew in the composting matter at all. The leftover seeds/weeds would end up being the least of your problems seeing as starting completely over will be the following step for amending unfinished compost to the soil. Try using the soil already there adding nutrients to it this growing season and add some food to the thriving bacteria pile. Or, if the soil is really bad, top soil from a local garden center mulch yard should help it out.

Yes, you may add fertilizer or horse manure.
Remember the composting material needs to be moist throughout. Water it and cover them just to keep moist.
